Support for Third Parties Grows in Suburban Lake/McHenry County
Wauconda – Sunday December 3, 2017 local resident and Grant High School Alumni Aaron Goldberg announced his run for the Democrat abandoned 64th district State Representative seat in the upcoming 2018 election with the Illinois Green Party. His announcement, coming in the wake of potentially huge Net Neutrality and tax code changes by the federal government, was met with excitement at the second meeting of a newly established McHenry-Lake County DSA/OUR Revolution chapter at The Church of the Holy Apostles.
During the meeting, Aaron Goldberg hinted at the tone of his campaign with a statement criticizing the Illinois electoral system “The entire Illinois campaign process takes 365 days, requires 2 to 10 times the signature requirements for new party and independent candidates to petition for ballot access; petition requirements that are radically disproportionate by office when comparing signature totals to population representation. While I would love to campaign on issues like Medicare For All, the Fight For 15, or Education Funding; we have some even more basic flaws to fix first. Ranked Choice Voting, small donor match, limiting party contributions to individual candidates, limiting contributions to parties and individual candidates, term limits, getting Illinois out of Cross Check, standardizing ballot access requirements, and the long time elephant in the room – Gerrymandering. This process is intimidating! Without a government accessible to ALL its citizenry, we can never hope to challenge the two private organizations which control our government.”
With third party support growing nationwide, the 24 year old’s statement comes as an echo of popular sentiment among millennials. Recently, an NBC News poll found millennial support of third party representation to be upwards of 71%. Hopes are high for third party and independent candidates as membership in the Democratic party hits a 27 year low while, in the last year, Democratic Socialists of America have seen their dues-paying membership more than triple; and Illinois Greens are mounting an ambitious challenge to the entrenched Democratic machine for Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, already having won local offices throughout the state in 2017.
